Understanding Restylane
What is Restylane?
Restylane is a popular dermal filler used to enhance facial features and smooth out wrinkles. It’s made from hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the human body that helps maintain skin hydration and volume. As we age, hyaluronic acid production decreases, leading to wrinkles and loss of facial volume. Restylane works by replenishing this lost hyaluronic acid, restoring a more youthful appearance. [1, 2]
How does Restylane work?
Restylane is injected into the targeted areas of the face. The hyaluronic acid in the filler attracts and binds to water molecules, creating a plumping effect that fills in lines and wrinkles. It also stimulates collagen production, improving skin texture and elasticity over time.
Benefits of Restylane
Wrinkle reduction: Restylane effectively smooths out moderate to severe facial wrinkles, such as nasolabial folds (smile lines) and marionette lines.
Lip augmentation: Restylane can be used to enhance lip volume, shape, and definition, creating a fuller and more youthful appearance. [3]
Facial contouring: By adding volume to the cheeks, temples, or under-eye areas, Restylane can help restore a more youthful facial contour. [4]
Restylane treatment process
The Restylane treatment process typically involves the following steps:
- Consultation: A consultation with a qualified healthcare provider is essential to determine if Restylane is right for you and to discuss your desired outcome.
- Treatment: The treatment is performed in-office and usually takes about 30 minutes. A topical anesthetic may be applied to numb the treatment area.
- Recovery: There is minimal downtime associated with Restylane, and most patients can resume their normal activities immediately after treatment.
- Results: The results of Restylane are typically immediate, and the effects can last several months.
Note: The specific Restylane product used and the number of treatment sessions required will vary depending on the individual’s needs and goals.
Understanding Botox
What is Botox?
Botox is a neuromodulator derived from the botulinum toxin type A, a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.
When used in small, controlled doses, Botox can temporarily paralyze muscles, which has a variety of cosmetic and medical applications. [5.6]
How does Botox work?
Botox works by blocking nerve signals to the muscles, preventing them from contracting. This muscle relaxation can smooth out wrinkles caused by repetitive facial movements and reduce excessive sweating. [7]
Benefits of Botox
Wrinkle prevention: By temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause wrinkles, Botox can prevent the formation of new lines and soften existing ones.
Migraine relief: Botox injections can be used to treat chronic migraines by blocking pain signals in the head and neck. [8]
Excessive sweating treatment: Botox can be injected into the underarms, palms, or soles to reduce excessive sweating.
Botox treatment process
The Botox treatment process typically involves the following steps:
- Consultation: A consultation with a qualified healthcare provider is necessary to determine if Botox is suitable for you and to discuss your treatment goals.
- Treatment: The treatment is performed in-office and usually takes about 10-15 minutes. Botox is injected into specific muscles using a fine needle.
- Recovery: There is minimal downtime associated with Botox, and most patients can resume their normal activities immediately after treatment.
- Results: The effects of Botox typically start to appear within a few days and last for several months.
Note: The number of Botox units required and the treatment areas will vary depending on the individual’s needs and desired outcome.
Combining Restylane and Botox
Synergistic effects of both treatments
Combining Restylane and Botox can offer a more comprehensive approach to facial rejuvenation by addressing different aspects of aging.
Restylane, a dermal filler, adds volume and hydration to the skin, while Botox relaxes the muscles that cause wrinkles. Together, they can create a more youthful, refreshed appearance.

BOTOX®
BOTOX® is a non surgical treatment that has been FDA approved since 2002 for treatment of frown lines between the eyes and above the nose. BOTOX® Cosmetic is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles that improves the look of moderate to severe frown lines (glabellar lines) in people 18 to 65 years of age for a limited period of time (approximately 4 – 6 months). It can also be used for a variety of facial lines and wrinkles, such as forehead lines, crow’s feet, bunny lines, marionette lines, smile lines, smoker’s lines, etc. You’ll be amazed at the difference you’ll notice in your appearance – refreshed and completely natural.
Restylane®
Restylane® is a natural cosmetic dermal filler that restores volume and fullness to the skin to correct facial wrinkles and folds. It can be used to augment cheeks, to enhance and add fullness to the lips, and to help lift the eyelids. Restylane® is made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally-occurring substance found in the body that provides the skin with volume. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane® attracts and binds to water. This allows Restylane® to last longer.
Restylane® results generally last 6 to 9 months, sometimes longer. An individual’s skin properties and the facial area treated can all affect the longevity of Restylane®. Added longevity may be achieved by coming in for a touch up while some filler is still present in the body, since the body continues to respond with its own collagen production where Restylane® has been placed. Subsequent procedures for maintenance usually require less of the product.
There are minimal adverse effects resulting from Restylane®. The most common side effects are temporary swelling and bruising around the injection site, generally lasting a few days.
JUVÉDERM® XC
At Englewood Dental, JUVÉDERM® XC is also used to give our patients a smooth and youthful look. JUVÉDERM® XC contains lidocaine to allow for maximum comfort during treatment. It can be used to smooth moderate to several wrinkles and facial folds in many different areas. Patients benefit from a natural, relaxed appearance with results lasting up to one year and find the treatment comfortable!
RADIESSE®
RADIESSE ® is a volumizing filler that provides structure and lift to the skin while stimulating the patients’ own natural collagen. It causes collagen to continue to grow for several months adding to the overall improvement in appearance that the filler creates. Collagen is what gives fullness to young skin. As people age, the production of collagen slows down – causing a lack of facial volume and flexibility. The result is wrinkles and sagging of skin. RADIESSE ® fills the wrinkles and stimulates nature’s own remedy to the aging process – collagen.
