Your Children's Teeth Should Last a Lifetime

At The Children's Dental Health Center, our team is dedicated to helping children of all ages learn how to properly care for their teeth with daily home care and regular dental visits. We emphasize preventive dentistry because it can ward off major oral health problems, from tooth decay to dental disease. Our entire team understands the special needs of young dental patients, and we have developed effective programs to make children feel comfortable and confident, while also instilling a respect for good oral health.

Our approach is "tell, show, do," which means we first explain, then we perform, then we watch. To teach your children how to brush their teeth effectively, for instance, our hygienist will explain the steps, show the actions, then watch the child brush and provide guidance. This same philosophy is used for dental treatment.

It may surprise some parents, but the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics all strongly encourage parents to have their children seen by a pediatric dentist before age one. It makes a lot of sense once you consider the following facts:

- Baby teeth are vulnerable to tooth decay from their very first appearance, typically between the ages of six and twelve months.

-The pain of tooth decay can prevent a child from eating correctly impacting overall development.

-Pediatric dentists provide parents with information on proper oral home care to give children an early start on good oral health.

-A recent paper in the Pediatric Dentistry journal showed that children who wait to the age of two or three for their first dental visit are more likely to require restorative work as well as emergency visits.   The study also stated that children who have their first dental visit before age one actually have 40% lower costs in their first five years than children who do not.

You'll find that The Children's Dental Health Center provides comprehensive, age-appropriate care for infants and preschoolers, elementary-aged children, middle school children, and high school/early college age kids. This includes preventive, general, restorative, and orthodontic care, among other services.
